Multitasking...

We all think we do it.  We all think we are "GOOD" at it.  We all will tell anyone that ask, oh I can multitask.  GUESS WHAT, we can't.  No one can.  Your brain is not wired to do multiple things at one time.  Even a computer can't multitask..

The dictionary meaning for multitasking is: doing one or more things at once.  Where did this term come from you ask.  Ironically it came from a paper written by a computer company back in 1965.  In the paper it stated "the ability of a microprocessor to apparently process several tasks simultaneously..  Funny word "apparently"..  You see even a computer can't do two things at one time.  It does have the capability to jump from one thing to the next quickly (unlike the human brain) but CAN'T do them at the same time.  I ask you a question, if a computer can't really "multitask" why do we believe we can?

Here are some things for you to ponder...

  • How much time do you think we waste jumping from one thing to the next
  • Are you able to brush your teeth and tie your shoes
  • Can you text a message and drive a car
  • When on a conference call, do you do emails as well
  • When talking to your significant other or someone important to you are you doing other things
These are are serious questions.  Let me answer a couple of them...
  • When doing emails "while" listening to a conference call you are not effectively listening.  You are not giving either task your full attention and important details WILL be missed
  • No it is not possible to brush your teeth and tie your shoes.  If you think it is, please video it and post it
  • I'm sure I can go online and find MANY accidents that happened because someone THOUGHT they could text while driving
  • Not giving the ones you love your full attention, making eye contact with them during the conversation and ACTUALLY listening can result in a number of misunderstandings, hurt feelings and things just not getting done.
Here is the bottom line folks..  Although multitasking sounds AMAZING it is not possible.  I encourage you to focus on the task you are currently doing.  You might be surprised what happens at the end of the day.  Your work may be more thorough, your relationships stronger, your next dental visit easier and the safety of others taken into consideration..

Whew..  My seems are a little less stressed now.  Cheers
